Choosing the Right Drainage Channel — A Complete Guide
Understanding load classes, materials and applications for surface water drainage channels. Covers domestic, driveway, commercial and industrial requirements.
Understanding Load Classes (EN 1433)
Drainage channels are classified by their maximum load capacity under EN 1433, the European standard for linear drainage. Choosing the correct load class for your application is essential — an under-specified channel can fail structurally under load.
Pedestrian / Light Use
Typical Applications
Patios, garden paths, pedestrian areas, driveways with no vehicle access
Forti Nova Products
Domestic polypropylene channels, polymer concrete A15 channels
Light Vehicle
Typical Applications
Residential driveways, car parks with light vehicles, cycle paths
Forti Nova Products
Driveway channel range — polypropylene and polymer concrete B125 systems
Medium Duty Commercial
Typical Applications
Commercial car parks, loading areas with medium vehicles, petrol stations
Forti Nova Products
Industrial C250 channel range
Heavy Duty
Typical Applications
Roads, main driveways, heavy lorry routes, highways, public areas
Forti Nova Products
Industrial D400 channel range
Extra Heavy
Typical Applications
Aircraft stands, dock areas, extreme industrial loading
Forti Nova Products
Industrial F900 channel range
Always select a load class that meets or exceeds the maximum load your installation will experience. Consult a structural engineer or our technical team if you are unsure about the loading requirements for your specific project.

Common Drainage Applications
Residential Patios & Paths
A15-rated polypropylene channels are sufficient for pedestrian-only areas. A 100mm internal width channel is standard for most domestic applications.
Residential Driveways
B125-rated systems are required where vehicles will drive over or park across the drain. Both polypropylene and polymer concrete options are available in B125.
Bi-fold Doors & Thresholds
Slim-profile threshold channels provide a contemporary, low-profile drain solution at doorways and internal/external transitions. Available in silver and black aluminium grates.
Commercial Car Parks
C250 or D400 channels depending on the maximum vehicle weight. Polymer concrete construction recommended for longevity and chemical resistance.
Industrial Yards & Loading Bays
D400 or F900 heavy-duty systems for areas receiving HGV or repeated industrial loading. Specify ductile iron grates for high-strength applications.
Eco Parking & Grass Areas
Recycled plastic grass grid systems allow vehicles to park on a grass or gravel surface with permeable drainage and ground reinforcement.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between A15 and B125 drainage channel?
A15 is rated for pedestrian and light use only — suitable for patios, paths and areas where vehicles will not drive. B125 is rated for light vehicles and is the standard choice for residential driveways and domestic vehicle areas.
Can I use a domestic polypropylene channel on my driveway?
Only if vehicles will not drive over it. If vehicles will cross the drain, you need a minimum B125-rated system. Using an A15 product under vehicle load can cause it to crack or fail.
What is polymer concrete and why is it used for drainage channels?
Polymer concrete is a composite material that offers higher strength, chemical resistance and durability than standard concrete. It is used for drainage channels where greater load capacity, longer life and resistance to aggressive environments are required.
Do I need a sump unit at the end of my channel run?
A sump unit provides a collection point at the end of a drainage run, allowing debris to settle and be removed. It is not always mandatory but is recommended for longer runs and where the connected drain pipe is smaller than the channel outlet.
What accessories do I need for a complete channel drainage installation?
A complete installation typically requires: channels, grates, end caps or stop ends, at least one end cap outlet connecting to the underground drain, and potentially corner units or T-junctions depending on your layout. Contact us and we can confirm the accessories for your specific channel type.
What is a SuDS-compliant drainage system?
SuDS stands for Sustainable Drainage Systems. SuDS-compliant drainage manages surface water in a way that mimics natural drainage patterns, typically by allowing water to infiltrate into the ground rather than directing all runoff to combined sewers. Our Eco Parking grass grid is designed to be SuDS-compliant.
Can Forti Nova advise on which channel system is right for my project?
Yes. Call us on 01254 433987 or email info@fortinova.co.uk with details of your application, the area dimensions, load requirements and location. We can advise on the appropriate system and accessories.
Do you supply drainage products for trade and commercial projects?
Yes. We supply to contractors, builders, landscapers, civil engineers and public sector organisations. Contact us to discuss trade pricing and account options.
What is the lead time for drainage products?
Lead times depend on the product and quantity required. Some products are available for immediate collection or next-day delivery; others may require a short lead time. Call us before ordering to confirm availability.
Do you install drainage systems as well as supply them?
No. Forti Nova is a drainage product supplier. We supply the channels, grates and accessories to contractors and tradespeople who carry out the installation work.
