How to Choose a Channel Drain — Step-by-Step Selection Guide

Published: 10 July 2026 · Forti Nova Drainage Channels

A practical eight-step guide to selecting the right channel drainage system for your project — from identifying the application to completing the accessories list.

Disclaimer: This guide is for general selection assistance. Final product selection must be verified against current manufacturer documentation, project-specific conditions and applicable installation requirements.
1

Identify the application

Where is the channel being installed? A patio, driveway, threshold, car park, road or industrial site all have different drainage requirements. The application determines the minimum load class required and influences the choice of material and grate type.

2

Determine the traffic

Will the channel be in a pedestrian-only area, or will vehicles cross it? If vehicles will cross the channel, a minimum B125 rating is required. If commercial vehicles or HGVs will cross it, C250 or D400 may be required. If you are unsure, contact our team.

3

Select the load class

Once you know the traffic type, you can identify the appropriate load class. A15 for pedestrian only; B125 for residential driveways and light vehicles; C250 for commercial car parks; D400 for roads and HGV routes; F900 for extreme industrial environments. Always verify against the manufacturer's documentation for the specific product.

4

Choose the channel material

Polypropylene channels are lightweight and economical — suitable for A15 and B125 applications. Polymer concrete channels offer greater strength and chemical resistance — typically used for B125, C250, D400 and F900 systems. Both materials are available in the Forti Nova range.

5

Choose the grate type and finish

Grate selection depends on the load class, the application and the required finish. Heelguard grates are recommended where pedestrians use the area alongside vehicles. Slot drains provide a more discreet appearance. Aluminium grates are used for threshold applications. Ductile iron grates are used for B125 and higher classifications.

6

Plan the run length and outlets

Measure the channel run length you need. Channels are supplied in 1000mm sections as standard (some threshold channels in 2000mm). You need at least one end cap outlet connecting the channel run to your underground drain pipe. Longer runs may need additional outlets or a sump unit at the low point.

7

Select the accessories

A complete installation requires end caps or stop ends to terminate the run, at least one end cap outlet, and any corner units or connectors required for your layout. A sump basket allows sediment to be cleared from the run. Check that all accessories are compatible with your specific channel product family.

8

Confirm and order

Contact Forti Nova with your project details — application, load class, channel length, outlet requirements and any site-specific constraints. We can confirm the right product, advise on quantities and provide pricing and lead times.
